$13,000
I have an all steel 1978 Jeep CJ5 with only 49k original miles priced at a money in the bank price of $15k. What I mean by that is that if you don't drive this in the salt or enter the tough truck competition at your local fair, you can recoup your investment if you ever want to part ways with it. You may make a bit or lose a bit but you won't lose your shirt owning this low mile all steel collectable.
A senior lady called me awhile back about this Jeep and wanted work done on it which I don't do. I did offer her some shop names and the typical advice how I don't like young drivers in CJs as she was going to leave it for the grandkids to run around in.
She took a few weeks and called me back and wanted me to come look at it to purchase as she didn't want strangers coming to her vacation home.
Her late husband found it sitting and full of leaves. Apparently the floors had gone bad so they bought all a new steel body for it with the JEEP stamp.
They had a respectable paint job put on it and used it around their lake house. I understand he passed and it was sitting long enough the gas smelled bad but it still started and ran surprisinlgy well.
The frame does not look like a West coast frame but is hammer solid and never repaired and doesn't need to be.
The steering was tight but it handled oddly at speed. I found it was sold new with from the factory no sway bar and it didn't have a stabilizer.
I added both and some better tires and it's about as good on the road as a Cj5 can be!
The front seats were nice but ugly so a nice new set of low backs added.
We dropped the tank and put in fresh fuel and it starts and runs very well.
It does have power steering and disc brakes.
Nice tilt steering column and oem wheel.
The soft top is an original style black replacement top and doors in good useable condition.
The engine and trans act like they should at only 49k. The transmission is the best ever put in a CJ as the T18a 4 speed. Virtually indestructable in a stock Jeep with a 6cylinder. Of course the 4wd works as it should.
All lights and controls work and all gauges are original and not Chinese facsimilies.
The replacement tub looks respectable and you wouldn't know it except it is too nice of metal to be original or if you had to heavily service it. It is far safer, more valueable and better than anything fiberglass.
I couldn't build this for $15k and I think the right buyer will really appreciate this classic low mile CJ5!

Rudy
